Here's a great story to show how this stuff works. A couple times when Jude was 4 years old he thrashed all the toys in his room for fun. Build and destroy! You'd walk in and there'd be lego soup smashed all over the place. One time I'd only been out of the room for 2 minutes and I heard the sound of 4YO godzilla. I walked in and the job was done.

I stood there in total disbelief and asked him "why did you just do that?" He looked at me fully serious and said "my hand did it - I couldn't stop it." He really thought he shouldn't be in trouble because his hand was the culprit. Of course he didn't want his hand punished either..

This is exactly what people do when they talk about their flesh, or their soul, or their self being the source of bad stuff in their lives. It's 4YO reasoning reinforced with 2400YO theo-philosophy. "I got over into my flesh, and things got out of control," or "I really need to empty myself of self," or "It's just a constant battle against my soulish nature."

Anything to avoid saying "I messed up!"

What's so valuable about being able to say "I messed up" (instead of "my hand did it") is...it's the first part of "God I'm sorry - forgive me for that - I don't want to mess up again." That's really all God needs to hear to flood you with total restoration and healing, and with his own power to step completely out of what you were stuck in. Your self will thank you for it.

as far as I understand , he did everything by faith- that means he acted in authority of His priesthood (before he died?). our hi-priest was tempted just as we are. it is written that if you walk in the spirit you will not fulfill - finish by acting - the deeds of the body. it doesn't say you did not want to do the temptation. I hate some of the things I want to do, but when I'm about to break and call Him, many times I pass through victoriously the sins in mind. Its comforting to know that jesus gets it, and though he would forgive if I tripped, he is well able to show us how to do it sinlessly in midst of temptation. Jesus I believe is the example of the way we could have been if only Adam and Eve...well, he's the correction. but believing that we must live with sin is no different than believing the body cannot exist without cancer.

The soul liability question is pretty ridiculous. I ask it because we talk that way about ourselves and don't see it as ridiculous. "Soul" just refers to the inner man, and more broadly to one's entire being. We see Jesus groaning in himself before raising Lazarus (John 11), and then saying at Gethsemane that his soul was exceedingly sorrowful even unto death (Matthew 26). What's happening in Gethsemane is a much heavier more aggravated version of what happened at Lazarus' tomb. In both cases we're being shown Jesus from the inside out. When it comes down to it, Jesus tells you plainly not to lose your soul even if it means gaining the whole world.

Here's what I'm getting at. Jesus said the Spirit makes alive, and the flesh counts for nothing. Still, as Irma pointed out - Jesus' flesh was holy, right? Jesus poured out his soul unto death. Was his soul holy or not? Jesus said of his own self he could do nothing. Was Jesus' self still holy?

I don't really understand the soul liability question. I do know the Holy Spirit raised him up right, and that by the time he was a man, he was ready to be about his Father's business. He knew who he was and what God's will was, and he daily committed himself to God's will. I don't know that there's an easier way, not that this is "easy."

Jesus came in the flesh... and His flesh was holy.... The word says...
2Cor 5:21
For he has made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Hebrews 7:26 >>
For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens;
1Peter2:22
WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS ANY DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH;
1John 3:5
You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin

Jesus denied His  SELF.
John 5:30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

John 5:19Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner

Mat 16:22-26: And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall never be unto thee. But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art a stumbling-block unto me: for thou mindest not the things of God, but the things of men. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever would save his life shall lose it: and whosoever shall lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what shall a man be profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? or what shall a man give in exchange for his life?

I am still asking the Holy Spirit about the "Jesus' soul a liabilty"? I have never heard it put that way. That's a good question....

Yeah, these are key questions. This is where we've allowed ourselves to get hung up. How did Jesus deal with being in the flesh? Was Jesus' soul a liability to him? How did he deal with self in himself?

Whoah. I've ever thought about it quite like that. I'd say as a man who was tempted he would need to have an identity separate from his identity as God. I'm encouraged by the idea that Jesus could have lived totally as a man, depending on his Father's gifts for everything divine he did.

That's pretty much exactly it. Paul says it so clearly in Galatians 2.20:
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

So...did Jesus have a self?

It's a life style thing. In context, self is the opposite of taking up your cross and following. So it must be putting down the idea of self preservation and taking up the cross then giving up the idea of a self directed life / your personal interests first / and following Jesus. So you let HIM make the decisions even when they hurt.
