Would you ever consider teaching an online songwriting workshop?
This song was one that God just dropped in my lap one day. I just started singing it, then grabbed a guitar and there were the chords. We sang it at church probably 70 times - it was clearly something God had for his people, and the only thing I had to do with it was to ask God to worship through me.
There is such an explosion of Holy Ghost inspiration when God allows us to really get a taste of the realm he lives in. Here I had spent years going around writing songs and singing about the kingdom of God with Soul-Junk, then all of a sudden I found myself in the middle of a church where everyone around me wanted to experience God and live out his kingdom just as bad as I did - & they’d been going strong for like 20 years at that point!
So…to answer the question…the songwriting class is all found in drinking DEEP from the river of God. Being around people who were so thirsty for God got me thirstier than I’d ever been - so I got to drink deeper than I’d ever drank before. Songs like this just spilled out while I was drinking. If you live full of the Spirit and constantly being filled with the Spirit, there has to be overflow. And when the overflow in our lives really begin to converge - no one will be able to settle out for anything less than songs breathed straight out of heaven.
Thank you for this arresting answer. I’m really glad you pointed to God and not to yourself. It makes me realize that it’s not about our abilities. It is truly about Him and not us. But if you would, let me draw something else out of you about writing music, is that okay? Do you feel anything when you are making music - do you feel the presence, the glory, the inspiration of God? Do you think it is necessary to sense that? Sometimes other people have said to me “your voice is really anointed” and I don’t know what it means. I don’t feel anything powerful when I sing. And when I write music, I don’t feel that it’s anointed, actually I usually don’t even like it very much! I don’t think it’s very creative or powerful, but then other people like it and will say they were blessed…so I want to know what its like for you and other musicians. I know it sounds funny but do you like your own music? Do you sense its power? Soul Junk certainly is incredibly creative and inspiring and carries the weight of God. Do you feel that way about it?
Well, in Samuel’s case the word of the Lord came to him at a young age, and he had no idea what was going on. Eli had to tell him word for word how to respond to God. In Saul’s case the Spirit of God came on him and he joined the company of prophets (totally surprising everyone) - then he went and hid in the baggage for embarrassment when they wanted to make him king. When Elijah came and threw his mantle on Elisha, Elisha chased after him and asked for permission to say goodbye to his family. Elijah basically told him to do whatever he wanted.
It is up to each of us to personally go headlong after God on this, because there really is no formula to functioning in his anointing. I can tell you this - you have received an anointing from the Holy One. It is God himself who has established you in Christ and has anointed you. The anointing you have received teaches you about everything, and even as it has taught you - abide in him. Make it all about him. Make his anointing your entire confidence. Ask him for wisdom to know the difference between your own ability and his anointing. Choose continually to live in a place where of yourself you can do nothing; but where you can do all things through Christ (the anointing of the Anointed One) who strengthens you.
There is something very naive and pure and about the way you’re asking this - you’re small in your own eyes. That is exactly what you want, please stay that way! Saul got puffed up after he began functioning in the anointing he had received, but David remained small in his own eyes. God loves to hang out with the contrite - those who tremble at his word.
