A love for God and His people with no hitch to the flesh (Barnabas’ gift) vs. a love for the honor of men with no hitch to the fear of the Lord (Ananias’ gift)
Since Ananias and Sapphira didn’t give all of themselves, what they did give ended up being worthless. Barnabas’ field ended up being equal to the old widow’s two coins (Mark 12:41). We can’t keep parts of our lives away from God.
The wild part is that both of these were completely voluntary offerings, and way above what anybody would expect of either of them. Check out Acts 8.20 and Leviticus 10.3. Why was there such a severe judgment on Ananias and Sapphira when they were going over and above in their giving?
Yes, all indications are that they originally intended to give it all. I’m guessing they told the apostles they were giving all the proceeds of the sale of the land to the church. Then once they sold the land, something came up and they probably realized they “needed” to keep back part of the price. They could have legitimately either told the apostles this, or better yet - they could have given it all and trusted God to supply the need. I’ve been writing a lot about it on p. 99-102 of Download Pure.PDF

Was it because they would give all but failed to do so?
…they said they would…
*oops*
